The panel discussion is a valuable, time-tested teaching technique used in classrooms of all types to help students understand the experiences of a particular group of people. My previous experiences facilitating successful panel discussions led me to believe that a panel would be a good method to use here. It was not. In an effort to create a panel that represented a diversity of functions and practitioners, I ended up with too many panelists and, consequently, an ineffective exercise.
Main Character Speed Dating

Before you do, tell students a lot of the participants are Asian, that that is just a coincidence, and that there is no need to make comments about it. This is supposed to be fun, not antagonistic. Explain to students that in many societies in the past, young people did not choose their own spouse. Tell students they will be a Matchmaker for their character.
It will be their job to make a good match that will work and in which both characters would be happy. You will probably have to say this a number of times especially if you are teaching middle school. Tell students that in this first of three Speed Dating activities, they will be giving their partner a general overview of their character. Teenagers are loud. Spread students out as much as possible so they can hear each other.
This method works well when you have few or no extremely socially awkward students. If you have any students who are particularly mean to other students, forcing them to sit face to face might not be the best idea. Sometimes, despite your best efforts to make something fun, one or a few students completely ruin it. We go to a large space where noise will not be a problem. Girls sit on one side, boys sit on the other directly across from girls.
I spread students out as far as possible. I have only the girls rotate; boys stay put. If there are an unequal number of boys to girls, you have a few options: These will be your socially confident boys with a good sense of humor. Or, pair two boys to one girl or the other way around depending on the gender balance in your class.
Or, have some students wait out a rotation. This is my least favorite option especially in middle school. Establish that girls will always start first. This is, of course, not perfect. I recommend to students that they create a character who is their same gender, but I do not mandate it. If a student creates a character who is the opposite gender from himself, I have that student sit on the opposite side. I remind students often that learning about different characters is the point.
The majority of students in middle school will be reading books with main characters who are their same gender. If not, they simply sit on the opposite gender side. Have students make appointments with five other students. Students will gravitate toward those with whom they feel comfortable. They will then meet up with those students during the speed dating. Students will go to their appointments and talk about their characters.
I give prizes at the end for the matchmaker who made the most matches for his or her character and the matchmaker who made the least. I do not hand out prizes until we have completed all three Character Speed Dating activities: I also do not tell students that there will be prizes. I hold off telling them to avoid students creating characters they think will win the most or least dates.
Or, if students are matchmaking for a character in a book they are reading, to make sure they do not exaggerate or fabricate things about their main characters to win the most or least dates.
